The frikandel is the most popular snack in the Netherlands, followed by the kroket.

To tell you how popular, according to some research 600 million frikandellen are produced in the Netherlands each year. Population of the Netherlands is roughly 17 million which means that each ‘Dutchmen’ consumes 37 frikandellen each year.

This snack, in its current modern version, was developed after WWII. In 1954 butcher Gerrit de Vries changed his meatballs to the shape of a frikandel. The reason behind his was that due to a change in legislation his own meatballs did not fulfil the new requirements. A German costumer suggested to change the shape and name into what we now know as the frikandel.

But what is in it? A skinless sausage. There are different versions from different producers. We at the Dutch Snacks Company prefer our adapted version which consists of a combination of supreme quality chicken and beef, subtly seasoned with a combination of spices to give it that unique texture and taste experience.

They can be consumed on the side with chips, in a bun with a nice sauce and even as a 'special' when it's split through the middle with mayonaise, ketchup and onions added.

    I tried these in an air fryer which worked fine bringing make happy memories of the many frikandel specials I enjoyed while living in Holland years ago

Cooking instructions

For best results cook as follow:
From frozen: deep fry at 175C for 5-6 minutes
From chilled: deep fry at 180C for 4-5 minutes
Ensure food is piping hot before consuming
